Structured light, laser or photogrammetry: choosing a 3D-scanning method

3D scan of a large automotive fascia assembly

Not every part wants the same scanner. The right method depends on size, surface finish and the accuracy you actually need.

Structured light

Fast and accurate for small-to-medium parts with matte surfaces. Our default for brackets, housings and mechanical components where tolerances matter.

Laser scanning

Better for larger assemblies and shiny or dark surfaces that trip up structured light. Trades a little resolution for reach and robustness.

Photogrammetry

Useful for very large objects or on-site capture where a scanner is impractical. Great for form and context, less so for tight tolerances.

How we choose

We pick based on the part in front of us — often combining methods, then aligning everything into one clean reference mesh for the CAD work that follows.
